Web of Science Journals
Many universities and funders accept or require papers in the Web of Science Core Collection. We help you understand which index fits your discipline and prepare research that meets its journals’ standards.
What you should know
The Core Collection includes the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), the Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI) and the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI). Clarivate evaluates journals before including them.
ESCI covers journals that are still being evaluated or that meet quality criteria but sit outside the other three. Your university may treat these indexes differently, so read its rules first.

How to check it yourself
- Use the Clarivate Master Journal List to confirm the index and status
- Check your institution’s rules about SCIE, SSCI, AHCI and ESCI
- Confirm the journal is still listed when you submit and when the paper is published
Common questions
Is ESCI accepted everywhere?
No. Some institutions accept ESCI, others ask for SCIE or SSCI. Check your university’s current rules.
Is Web of Science the same as SCI?
SCI (SCIE) is one index inside the Web of Science Core Collection. The Core Collection also has SSCI, AHCI and ESCI.
